|  | | H+H Celcon Limited | | 10/10/2006 | | | Leicester-based Williams Builders Ltd used Celcon's Thin-Joint system to infill a four-storey steel-framed apartment block, helping cut build time and reduce wastage on site. Their first experience of using the system was so good that they are now using it on all their future projects.
Stephen Williams, director of Williams Builders Ltd, said: 'It was clear from the start that the Thin-Joint system was going to save us time and money. The system is quicker and cleaner, which helped us cut build time and save on waste removal costs - both major issues on a large project like this one.'
Stephen used Celcon's Jumbo Plus aircrete blocks with Celfix thin-layer mortar. The use of large, lightweight blocks with a quick-setting mortar is much faster than using aggregate blocks and conventional mortar. Celcon aircrete blocks are easily cut on site with a handsaw and the off-cuts can be used elsewhere on the project, significantly reducing wastage on site.
Celcon aircrete has superior thermal insulation properties compared with aggregate blocks, whilst a thin layer of mortar reduces heat loss through the joint. The Thin-Joint system contributed to Stephen achieving a u-value of 0.35, easily meeting the existing requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations.
Stephen also used Celcon aircrete blocks to construct the internal partitions of the apartments. The blocks have excellent acoustic insulation properties helping him fully comply with Part E of the Building Regulations (using pre-completion testing), an important factor in the construction of multi occupancy dwellings.
The four-storey apartment block, called The Fosse Building, is located close to Leicester city centre and consists of 21 spacious two-bedroom apartments. They are all finished to a high specification, many with balconies, and fully fitted with SMEG kitchens and Roca sanitary-ware bathrooms.
