When award-winning developers Binks Vertical lovingly restored and updated the derelict Ledgard Bridge Mill into 119 luxury apartments, there was a clear front-runner in the choice of materials for the ultra-stylish kitchens. Corian®, the high-performance solid surface invented by DuPont, had all the attributes demanded for an upmarket, high-spec, contemporary conversion.

'This is a premium development,' says Richard Binks, 'and it was most important that we put in superior kitchens with quality worksurfaces. We looked at granite but came down firmly on the side of Corian®.'

With an unrivalled combination of aesthetic values and practical benefits, Coriang won the day primarily because of properties such as easy-maintenance, seamless joining - and the peace of mind that comes with its renowned toughness and durability. Furthermore Corian®, being lighter weight, repairable and able to be joined on site, has considerable advantages over stone when it comes to installation.

Richard Binks adds, 'it's a continuous surface with no joints for bacteria to nestle, and I have always been concerned about the hygienic status of materials. Another major consideration was the ability to create a pre-formed coved Corian® upstand, into which electrics can be mounted without penetrating the acoustic wall.'

While maintaining significant original features such as brickwork and columns, the interior of the mill has been utterly transformed. The apartments have been designed in a way that maximizes the incredible space offered by the structure, creating double-height open-plan areas and mezzanines in which the kitchens have key visual impact. All 119 apartments benefit from gorgeous, hard-wearing worksurfaces in either Aurora, Dusk, Shale or Mojave from the palette of over 70 Corian® colours.

The £25million development, desirably located in the commuter belt between Leeds, Manchester and Wakefield, has now sold over a third of its units and been named Transformation of the Year in the Yorkshire Residential Property Awards. The Corian® surfaces were supplied by CD UK Ltd and fabricated by ADL Projects Ltd of Wakefield.
