Wolseley UK, the UK’s largest distributor of construction products and materials together with Finnforest UK Ltd, the leading UK supplier of wood-based products, have combined to provide 50 commercial deck and pergola kits and 30 other timber structures, worth an estimated £110k, to the UK’s leading pub company Spirit Group.

In-line with the smoking ban, which came into effect in England from 1st July 2007, the deal has seen the structures delivered to some 80 pubs in the Punch Taverns estate, enabling many patrons a safe and comfortable alternative space in which to socialise.

Due to the popular demand for outdoor smoking shelters among the hotel and leisure facilities sectors, Wolseley and Finnforest have developed and manufactured the commercial deck kits to ensure they are fit for purpose in accordance with current Government legislation for provision for smokers. The two design options, a unique commercial deck and pergola system and a gazebo-style building, offer an attractive and versatile solution to creating useful sheltered space in an outdoor area.

The commercial deck and pergola consists of a high quality softwood pergola structure that incorporates composite timber deck boards for a durable and hardwearing finish. Sized at 2.5m x 3.9m, the deck and pergola kit can accommodate seating for a dozen or so people at any one time. The purpose-made kit can also be combined with bespoke decking designs to create individual styles and themes to blend in with pub or restaurant surroundings.

The composite deck boards of the commercial deck kit from Finnforest have a grained surface designed specifically to cope with wet conditions, providing a slip resistance surface. As a timber composite material the deck boards have a high durability against moisture and insect damage, providing a low maintenance material that requires no painting, staining or even waterproofing. The precision cut, pre-treated components are supplied in kit form for ease of build.

The investment, which comes as the pub operator prepares its property portfolio for the introduction of the smoking ban in England and Wales, is part of a significant sum that it is investing in facilities for smokers. It has committed £10 million for its leased estate, and £8 million across its Spirit Group of managed house pubs.

John Adams, Smoking Solutions Project Manager at Spirit Group said: “Wolseley together with Finnforest, have successfully designed, manufactured and delivered a fit for purpose solution that offers a comfortable and versatile area for our patrons and staff that wish to smoke. Aiding us in the care of duty we have for our patrons, the smoking shelters provide an ideal outdoor space for those wishing to smoke.”
