Over 5000m2 of Ruukki Nordicon wall elements have been installed by building envelope specialist Prater at the £11 million housing redevelopment project at Bourbon Lane, White City, London.

The Nordicon wall elements were assembled off-site and were installed by Prater on 78 new residential units for Octavia Housing and Care. The development, designed by architects Cartwright Pickard, includes a mix of shared ownership and affordable rented housing.

Main Contractor Como Homes, who is developing the site on behalf of Octavia, commissioned Prater to provide an offsite-fabricated façade solution to reduce on-site works to a minimum in what is a heavily congested area.

Prater teamed up with supply partner Ruukki to provide the Nordicon wall elements which were tailored to meet the precise requirements of the project.

Arriving on site in sealed packs with the windows already installed, the elements were simply hoisted and fixed in position onto the units by Prater’s specialist offsite installation team, following which the units were then ready to accept the specified timber rain screen cladding.

Nordicon wall elements can accommodate almost any form of conventional cladding, including rainscreens and profiled sheets. They are based around a framework of thermally broken steel purlins.

Available in a wide range of sizes, typically 3 metres x 8 metres, Elements are delivered to site, often with windows, doors and façade cladding already fitted. Facades can also be made using flat steel, aluminium sheets, wood, bricks, glass, render, as well as stone or ceramic tiles.

Elements usually provide the load bearing capacity for the structure of houses, up to three storeys. They fully answer the current call for more rapidly constructed, affordable dwellings.

In residential multi-storey buildings, elements are non-load bearing and are generally used as quickly installed curtain walling, cutting construction time. They can be pre-cut to accommodate features including arches, difficult corners or even balconies.

Nordicon wall elements are part of an innovative offsite range of pre-assembled solutions that include large unitised roofing structures.
