 | | VALLA CRANES MAKE LIGHT WORK OF COUNCIL STREETLIGHT IMPROVEMENTS | | | Valla Cranes | | 13/10/2006 | | | Hull City Council has made substantial savings in streetlight improvements throughout residential areas of the town thanks to Valla Cranes. A remote control Valla 20 TRX mobile crane has increased efficiency by seven fold in the lifting and removal of unsafe concrete posts from pedestrian footpaths and alleyways.
Once safely extracted from the ground each post, which can weigh up to 275kg, is carried by the crane to a flat bed removal vehicle for disposal. This operation previously required the erection of individual access towers with containment netting around each post. These were then cut down in sections and the pieces dragged by hand to the truck.
Of particular benefit to Hull City Council, the Valla's ability to both pick and carry items makes light work of removal in a single operation. The nimble Valla 20 TRX is ideally suited to this task, thanks to its rough terrain tracks and compact 950mm-wide chassis. In addition to being able to easily negotiate kerbstones and narrow footpaths, remote control operation helps operators to accurately manoeuvre the self -propelled crane from a safe distance.
'I'm absolutely delighted with the Valla - we're responsible for over 37,000 lighting columns in and around Hull, so any efficiency increases in streetlight removal are hugely important,' says John Harland, Street Lighting Operations Manager for Hull City Council.' Each team have gone from removing around 3 posts per day to anything up to 21, and by doing away with sawing and manual handling of posts it is considerably safer too.'
