 | | OVENTROP'S NEW VALVE CONTROLS COST OF DHW AT SWINDON COLLEGE
| | | Oventrop | | 29/09/2006 | | | Oventrop's new multifunction domestic hot water (DHW) secondary circulation regulating valve, the Aquastrom T Plus, has been chosen by N G Bailey (Bristol) for hydronic and thermostatic balancing of the DHW system for Swindon College's new North Star Campus buildings, for which they have the services design and build contract. As well as simplifying the commissioning stage, the valve also provides significant energy savings by thermostatically controlling temperature and flow in the system.
The valve is factory preset and operates as a temperature control valve on the DHW return. Once the system is up to temperature the valve throttles down to a residual minimum flow to limit the amount of heat loss in the system and reduce the energy/cost required to raise the return water back up to flow temperature. As soon as the hot water in the return pipe cools to the preset temperature, usually 552C, the valve responds by allowing more flow thus eliminating cold dead legs and the risk of Legionella bacteria growth. As well as temperature balancing, the new valve also provides an hydronic balance of the DHW system and enables automatic system pasteurisation when the HWS generator or stored water temperature is raised to 752C.
The new campus comprises a main 4-storey block and two workshop blocks providing 10,000m² of purpose designed space. Within the main building is a new learning resource centre and a performing arts space as well as general classrooms and computer facilities. It also houses a refectory and an advice and guidance facility. The workshop buildings provide facilities for the brick, plumbing, and woodwork trades and art and design courses. Mechanical and Electrical Consulting Engineers for the project are Waterman Building Services, Bristol.
Boilers, pumps and associated equipment are contained in the main building's ground floor plant room. Oventrop valves have been used exclusively throughout the plant room and the heating and DHW circuits. AV6 thermostatic radiator valves and Combi 2 lockshield sets control radiators in the main block and workshops. To facilitate systems balancing throughout the new buildings Oventrop Hydrocontrol double regulating valves, Hydroset commissioning sets, isolation valves and strainers were also supplied.
