CLARK-DRAIN’S RESPONSE TO MANHOLE COVER THEFT
Clark-Drain
13/02/2008
Local authorities are having to face up to a new trend: the theft of manhole covers from highways and pedestrian walkways. They are then being sold-on for scrap and these incidents are occurring more frequently as the price of metal continues to soar. When they are taken, there are obvious dangers and Clark- Drain is offering a timely reminder that thefts can be deterred if the right manhole cover is installed.
Manhole covers not only provide access to sewer systems but can also act as access covers for the utilities. Once they go missing, the dangers to pedestrians as well as drivers are great whilst there can also be an increased risk of flooding. Gullies as deep as 10 metres can be left exposed without a safety cover.
Clark-Drain’s solution for loading applications up to 35KN is the CLKS 452 dual-locking polypropylene inspection cover and frame for 450mm inspection chambers. The demand for this product is already high as more organisations look to replace cast iron covers which are not compliant with Part H of the Building Regulations. By using the CLKS 452 dual locking cover and frame, local authorities can replace a steel cover with a lockable plastic version that offers the required performance in pedestrian areas, but is lockable and therefore not at risk from theft.
Another replacement cover is the Clark-Drain 701 H lockable cover for heavier duty highway applications and suitable for loadings up to 400kN. This ductile iron cover and frame is kitemarked to BS EN 124 D400kN and is Highways Agency HA104/02 Compliant. For security it has closed keyways and for long life performance is black bitumen coated.
