 | | JOINT FAVOURITE ROOFLIGHTS AT GALWAY RACES | | | Brett Martin | | 18/12/2007 | | | Brett Martin Daylight Systems successfully overcame many challenges during the process of creating a unique combination rooflighting solution for the complex cantilevered canopy roof of the Killanin Stand at Galway Racecourse in west Ireland. Designed by EPR Architects Ltd, this magnificent new stand was built by Michael McNamara & Company with Deane Roofing & Cladding installing Brett Martin’s Xlok Ultra panel glazing soffit system and Trilite Ultra 36 translucent GRP weather sheets.
The Killanin Stand’s elevated and exposed location near the Atlantic coast meant that Brett Martin’s experienced technical team was tasked with creating a stylish canopy roof capable of protecting spectators from the elements and coping with exceptionally high wind loadings. Working closely with the architects, roofing contractors and steelwork contractors Ballykine Structural Engineers, the technical team’s design solution was this striking aero wing shaped canopy roof with its attractive panel glazed soffit and outer skin rooflight covering that curves from front to back and along its length.
The Xlok Ultra interlocking panel system was installed inverted to form the canopy soffit with opal tinted Marlon ST 25mm 5-wall structured polycarbonate glazing sheets used to produce a soft, diffused daylighting effect. The aluminium frames were polyester powder coated white to blend with the opal glazing and many of the panels were individually fabricated to fit snugly at the junctions with the stand’s curved vertical glazing and roof fascia.
Almost 2,500 square metres of Trilite Ultra 36 translucent GRP weather sheets completely cover the stand’s canopy roof. Installed in lengths of over 17 metres, the GRP sheets are opal tinted to provide 50% light transmission which produces a carefully controlled level of diffused daylight. With a Superlife finish for enhanced UV protection and durability, the sheets are only end-lapped at positions where the roof angle is greater than 5° to comply with best roofing practice and to ensure the structure remains watertight. The Trilite Ultra 36 GRP weather sheets and Marlon ST structured polycarbonate soffit glazing panels meet SAA Class 1 fire rating and achieve Class B non-fragility. All the sheet weights, panel sizes and fixing details were determined by the technical team and extensive use was made of CAD modelling during the design stages.
