Halfen’s stone facades team has successfully completed an unusual and complicated project - to design and supply a fixing system for the natural stone cladding of the new Snowdon Summit Building, Hafod Eryi.

Designed by Ray Hole Architects for Snowdonia National Parks Authority with Carillion as main contractors, the building comprises a watertight aluminium skin clad in granite. In order to resists the extremes of the weather - the building is some 1,085 metres above sea level - Halfen supplied all fixings in stainless steel.

The roof stone fixing system had to cater for random length stone coursing on a cambered roof with radius edges. This was achieved by the use of a primary aluminium grid, Halfen’s SUK rails and specially fabricated Halfen paddle bolts.

Distinctive bull nose feature stones around the eaves of the roof were individually fixed to a separate rail system. This consisted of Halfen vertical toothed channels welded to the structure to which corbel cleats were bolted providing both support and restraint.

The system for securing the stone cladding for the walls had to accommodate the batter (angle) of the cladding, which was achieved by a vertical channel fixed to the aluminium skin with bolted restraint ties. These could be fixed at any point in the channel and rotated to allow for the batter.

Key elements in the design of the fixing systems were to provide speed of installation to help overcome site conditions, on site adjustment, and security and longevity.
