When Berkeley Homes were planning their award winning project to regenerate the Tabard Square area of Borough in London, they turned to Alumasc’s Hydrotech to provide the waterproofing for the landscaped podium areas and the apartments’ balconies and terraces.

Tabard Square is an exciting regeneration project in one of the most historic areas of London and the project has already received a number of accolades including Best Design Initiative (HBF Innovation Awards) and Overall Winner at the 2007 Housing Design Awards.

Rolfe Judd, the project’s architects, involved Alumasc with the detailing and design from the outset. Hydrotech waterproofing was specified for the central podium structure over the car parking and services area, which provides a wide open public space to facilitate shops, restaurants and green spaces for residents and local people to enjoy. Alumasc also supplied Hydrotech for the waterproofing of the many balconies and terraced areas attached to the individual apartments and circulation areas.

The waterproofing to the central landscaped podium area included innovative sustainable urban drainage details, directing flows into the rainwater management network for potential use in future irrigation systems. These details also reduced the need for major falls whilst directing run off water to outlets, regardless of their location within the slab. Alumasc’s Elastodrain 200 with filter sheet was utilised as part of the overall solution to allow for heavy traffic and vehicular access for the majority of the podium roof and this was complimented further by the use of Alumasc Gatic Slot Drains where increased levels of surface drainage were required.

A major part of the podium waterproofing consisted of bespoke planter details for mature trees and extensive lawned areas installed by roofing contractor, M & J Roofing, using hybrid flat and green roof details.

Berkeley Homes insisted on the specification of Hydrotech as they were looking for a hot melt system with an excellent performance track record and a simple application process, despite the complex requirements of the project. Hydrotech waterproofing will last for the lifetime of the structure and is warranted by Alumasc for 20 years.
