SPAB (The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) is running a series of technical courses in 2006 specifically designed for those working with historic buildings. From the conservation of decorative leadwork and historic paint to leaded lights and plain glazing, the courses will provide information and first-hand practical experience for architects, surveyors, engineers, builders and conservation officers.
SPAB's highly respected technical courses are led by experts at venues throughout the country and feature case studies, question and answer sessions and the chance to explore the subjects covered in the company of interested, like-minded fellow professionals. Last year's courses were extremely popular and booking is essential.
Courses for 2006:
Conservation of Decorative Leadwork in association with the Worshipful Company of Plumbers, May 26th and 27th (Friday and Saturday). Today we are familiar with the dull grey appearance of lead rainwater goods, but in earlier times, particularly during the medieval period, these were often extravagantly ornamented, painted and gilded.
To a certain extent these embellishments were briefly revived by the Arts and Crafts Movement, but, increasingly, decorative leadwork skills are being lost. This two-day course at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in West Sussex will focus on decorative techniques including: repousse, carved and wrought work, pierced, tracery, open sand and other forms of casting and surface treatments such as gilding, painting and etching. The course will also look at essential plumbing leadwork skills such as joint solder wiping and piping fabrication. Talks will be supplemented on the second day by practical sessions demonstrating fabrication and repair techniques. Cost £140. (Min. 6 hours Continued Professional Development, CPD)
Plain Glazing and Leaded Lights, September 4th (Monday). In the world of historic glass, plain glazing is often a Cinderella with most of the attention devoted to decorative stained glass. However, plain glazing can be just as beautiful and significant. This one-day course is designed to further appreciation and understanding of this material and provide an introduction to repair techniques, with particular reference to the metal work supporting diamond and rectangular leaded lights. The course, for professionals and homeowners alike, will be held at the Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. Cost £85 (Min. 5 hours CPD)
Introduction to Historic Paint Technology in association with the Traditional Paint Forum. November 10th (Friday). Due to popular demand SPAB is holding its paint day again, this year in London at the Art Workers' Guild, Bloomsbury. The session covers limewash, soft distemper, oil bound water paints, oil paints, some later paints and issues including substrate preparation, constituent materials, application and post application care. (Min. 5 hours CPD). Cost £85 inc. lunch, refreshment and information papers. The aim is to provide interested architects, surveyors, engineers, builders and conservation officers with the basics of traditional paint technology.
SPAB is Britain's oldest conservation body established by William Morris in 1877. Today it is the largest and most technically expert national pressure group fighting to save old buildings from decay demolition and damage. SPAB represents the positive and practical side of conservation, offering information, advice and education to help people approach old buildings with discernment and care. | |
