Scafftag are proud to be suppliers of equipment tagging systems to the mammoth £4.2bn project at Heathrow's Terminal 5 (T5). When the new terminal opens in March 2008, it is expected to handle around 30 million passengers a year, and the vast 260 hectare site of T5 is one of the most talked about developments in the industry. But its innovative approaches to safety are also hitting the headlines.

BAA, which owns six other major UK airports as well as Heathrow, has focused on creating a proactive safety culture across all operations. This has clearly paid off in noticeable results. T5's safety record is four times better than the industry average and over 70% of the workforce believes that T5 is the safest place they've ever worked. Inherent in this culture of safety at T5, a wide range of Scafftag systems is in operation, including the original Scafftag®, specified by the T5 project team to be used by all contractors operating the vast scaffolding structures. The smaller Microtag® system has also been specified to all T5 contractors to help control HAVS (Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome). Towertag® and Plant Tag also feature among Scafftag systems used on site, and throughout, users benefit from durability, high visibility and instant access to equipment status information.

As Russell Hyam, Health Safety and Environmental Manager for BAA, points out: 'BAA has focused on shaping a positive force at T5 - a safe working culture. The visibility of the Scafftag systems used by our suppliers plays a vital role in supporting this culture.'

Operators using Scafftag systems include Palmers Ltd, which uses a range of Scafftag products nationwide, and Tone Scaffolding, who uses the Safetrak® system for paperless scaffold inspection. With the innovative Safetrak system, inspection information is electronically transferred between the Scafftag tagging system and handheld computers using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. Safetrak delivers control and simplicity as information is synchronised and centralised by the Safetrak software. Andy Needham, Managing Director at Tone, states, 'We are already witnessing a major return on investment from the Safetrak system. It has helped to virtually eliminate time spent in manually recording information on paper and duplication of this information electronically. This is a win-win for our customers, employees and business.'

As work progresses at the world's busiest airport, Scafftag look forward to continued contribution to conscientious and controlled attention to safety at T5.
