 | | AYRSHIRE GETS ITS HEAD TOGETHER | | | Ayrshire Metal Products (Daventry) Limited | | 25/03/2008 | | | A new design of deflection head bracket from steel building systems manufacturer Ayrshire Metal Products is not only easier to fix, it also reduces the amount of steelwork required in an external stud wall – delivering both time and cost savings. Deflection head brackets are fitted between the head track and vertical stud members in the wall, and are designed to accommodate the loads on the wall, while still allowing the floor above to deflect. This prevents floor loads being transferred to the vertical members of the wall and causing distortion.
Conventional deflection head details require the use of heavy duty head track, such as Ayrshire’s UR heavy duty channel track, combined with blocking and bracing below the deflection head to ensure that the partition stays rigid. With Ayrshire’s new design, one row of horizontal bracing and blocking is eliminated and the heavy duty head track is replaced with a standard duty head track, such as Ayrshire’s CR track. This not only makes for a lighter and more efficient construction, but the thinner gauge CR track is easier to screw through.
Manufactured from S390 galvanised steel and to BS EN 10147, the brackets have been extensively tested and are suitable for fixing to both concrete and steel. Designed for ease of installation – with only two screws required per bracket – the Ayrshire system requires fewer fixings to the outside of the frame.
Ayrshire Metal’s Managing Director David Wigley says, “This new head detail is a welcome addition to our Ayrshire Steel Framing range and could dramatically change the future design and installation of the deflection head joint. The simplicity of installation, coupled with the reduction in steel, delivers benefits to all parties involved in a construction project, from designer to installer.”
