 | | SCOTCH-BRITE BRAND CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AT THE CUTTING EDGE | | | 3M Company | | 09/06/2008 | | | Industry favourite celebrates half a century.
The Scotch-Brite brand range from 3M, the diversified technology company, celebrates its 50th birthday this year. With regular product updates, new technology introductions and groundbreaking innovations, the range has become a firm favourite of metal working professionals across the globe.
The Scotch-Brite brand began in 1958 when 3M introduced a range of finishing discs, which instantly defined a new standard in the creation of decorative finishing of metals. 1960 saw the introduction of hand pads for the reworking of wood and in the 1970s; Clean & Strip discs were developed for the cleaning of welds and the removal of paint.
Roloc Surface Conditioning Discs, developed to remove light coatings, rust, oxides and paint, were launched in 1980, with EXL, SF and XR wheels, designed to make polishing easier following in 1985. The 1990s saw the introduction of Radial Bristle Discs, Film-Backed Surface Conditioning Belts and Purple and Blue Clean & Strip Discs, which offered longer life and superior performance.
In 2000 3M introduced Scotch-Brite hand pads, pre-cut on a roll to reduce product wastage, with a handy dispenser. In 2006, the company added the Centre Pin system to its surface conditioning discs, a concept which helped to reduce vibration by centrally securing the discs to the back-up pad. Most recently, in 2007, Heavy Duty and Super Duty grades were added to give the product more bite – with the capability to remove small TIG weld but leave a great finish all at the same time.
Many of the Scotch-Brite products from 3M have become firm favourites in the industrial arena and the constant level of research and development within 3M will mean that more new products are sure to follow. | |
