D R Services undertook the design, manufacture and installation of the 3800 x 1500 mm canopy at Royal Holloway and Bedford College in Egham.
The modern lightweight design of the canopy belies its inherent strength with 10-10 toughened, laminated glass being employed to ensure that in the event of a heavy object striking the single expanse, not only will the splintering be minimised, but it will also stay in place.
To this end D R Services paid special attention to the manner in which the fixings clamp the glass. Also involved in the work, due to the canopy’s rearward sloping configuration, was the creation of a gutter detail against the wall. Rather than a conventional down-pipe, the outlet for this is in the form of a chain which the rainwater run-off follows down to the drain.
Director of D R Services, Julie Jarvis, recounts: “We utilised 10-10 toughened laminated glass that contains an interlayer of EVA foil, to give it great strength as well as clarity. We also had to make special fittings in stainless steel that are connected to the structure’s polyester powder coated arms, which were bolted to the façade by the main contractor. It was a very interesting commission.” | |
