THE FLOOR JOINTS THAT WHEELS WON’T NOTICE

High specification building environments from hospitals and food production facilities to high-bay warehouses containing automatic picking machinery are increasingly being designed with super flat floor surfaces. There is a danger, however, that the all round quality of the construction can be let down by the detail, motivating Tremco illbruck to introduce its new range of Bump-Free Mechanical Movement Joints.

Not only are the half dozen profiles in the range very robustly made and accurately engineered, but crucially the top surface features a zig-zag joint. This saw-tooth style solution is able to accommodate horizontal expansion or contraction in adjacent concrete slabs and, just as importantly, ensures that the wheels of specialised fork-lift trucks or other sensitive machinery can at no time bump or sink down into the groove.

A spokesperson for Tremco illbruck explains: “Although it might not seem significant for a vehicle wheel to drop two or three millimetres into a floor’s movement joint as it rolls across the area, the judder can disrupt some types of equipment. That movement is magnified the taller the vehicle is, which could throw the vertical alignment of the fork-lifts or picking machinery used to reach high bay racking, often rising seven or eight levels.

“This is a major problem for specifiers in certain sectors of the industry and one which our Bump-Free Movement Joints successfully address.”

The profiles come in standard 1.98 metre lengths, although shorter units can be ordered and adjacent sections can also be joined together on site using special connectors. The options available include two waterproof joints containing elastomeric inserts. There is also a choice of leg length to enable the joints to be incorporated into different types of floor construction.

The movement joints, which can accommodate very high dynamic loadings and are resistant to wash down with aggressive cleaning agents, are normally set into a channel in the concrete floor construction. The structural topping is then laid up to the edges of the profile’s top section.

Specifiers are advised to contact Tremco illbruck’s technical team to determine the type of joint required to satisfy their individual project demands, with delivery normally being made within four weeks of an order being placed.
