Kensa Engineering Ltd, the only UK manufacturer of a complete range of ground source heat pumps, has launched a Thermal Response Testing (TRT) service to ensure borehole field designs for larger commercial and residential projects benefit from precise site data.

According to Simon Lomax, Managing Director ‘most large ground source heat pump schemes require ground loops installed within boreholes to extract energy. The cost of drilling these boreholes can represent a major portion of the total contract value so it is important to establish site conditions to eliminate unnecessary expense. Our network of installers can utilise this service to provide competitively priced solutions and complete peace-of-mind to their clients’.

Kensa’s TRT rig has been designed to measure thermal conductivity through the entire length of a borehole, since thermal performance can significantly vary across different geological strata. Closed loop ground source heat pump systems operate by drawing thermal energy from the ground and transferring this to the space heating and domestic hot water systems, often -delivering four times the energy required to power the appliance. Kensa units can also feature a cooling mode to reduce internal temperatures during warmer weather.

Thermal response testing is generally applicable for projects where over 100kW of heating or cooling load is required. Using its own engineers to operate the rig, a thermal response test requires a single borehole, provided by others, which can subsequently be used as part of the final borehole field. Taking five days to acquire the base data, Kensa partners with a leading consultant thermogeologist to establish thermal conductivity; once established, this figure, typically expressed as watts per linear metre, can then be used to determine the borehole field design after the building’s heating and cooling profiles have been provided.

Sarah Hemming, Kensa’s Marketing Executive reports that the TRT service is being used by a wide variety of clients. ‘Interest in ground source heat pumps is growing dramatically and it is important that Kensa supports its installers by providing this service to guarantee the quality of system designs. Already, M+E consultants and clients have asked Kensa to establish thermal conductivity at housing developments, airport extensions and new retail facilities’.
