 | | DM1 CONCRETE FLOOR FOR TEVA PHARMACEUTICALS CONSTRUCTED USING SOMERO SXP LASER SCREED | | | Somero Enterprises Ltd | | 11/08/2008 | | | Project News – June 2008, TEVA Pharmaceuticals HQ, Glasshoughton, England
Since 1988, with the purchase of their first S-240 Laser Screed®, Stanford Industrial Flooring has continued to invest in specialist equipment to achieve the results that their clients demand, and today Stanford is the proud owner of two S-240 Laser Screeds, three SXP Laser Screeds and two STS-130 Topping Spreaders. And with so many projects on their books, the Stanford fleet of Somero Laser Screeds is rarely idle.
During May and June 2008, Stanford Industrial Concrete Flooring Ltd undertook the construction of the industrial flooring for TEVA Pharmaceuticals new UK Headquarters near Castleford, England. The main contractor was Winvic Construction Ltd who was providing the 200,000ft² of warehouse and 60,000ft² of office space for TEVA on behalf of the developer Prologis. The floor specification was particularly demanding as DM1 to Appendix C, Concrete Society TR34 2003 3rd Edition was to be used for the VNA areas and FM2 Special for the free movement, conveyor and packaging areas.
Demands on quality were extremely high from Israeli based TEVA and they were very keen to see the defined movement tolerances as constructed with no reliance on corrective grinding as they felt grinding was an aesthetic issue they were not willing to accept. TEVA employed a number of independent consultants from as afar as Israel, Germany and the UK, all to scrutinise the detailing, planning and construction of the floors. Stanford immediately turned to their Somero SXP Laser Screed and STS130 Topping Spreader machines to aid their experienced installation gang in the construction of such a prestigious project.
The 90kN racking leg load from the specification was laid out, detailed and the slab designed accordingly by Stanford slab engineers taking into account joints and heavily trafficked areas all to the approval of TEVA and the design team. The C40 concrete, using a superplasticiser for low shrinkage, was delivered from a nearby batching plant at a rate of up to 48m³/ hr whilst the Dove Grey cementitous topping was loaded into the Topping Spreader from site based loading vessels. The Somero SXP Laser Screed performed faultlessly and managed to achieve such a high degree of flatness throughout the entire slab, especially in the high tolerance DM1 areas, TEVA accepted the slab without a single cm² of grinding! The even coverage from the STS130 Topping Spreader also gave TEVA the most consistent colour and uniform appearance expected from the use of a high specification dry shake material and proved once again the high standards that can be delivered with the right machinery and right flooring contractor.
Easily capable of screeding 4,000m² per day, provided that the supply of concrete is good enough, you rarely see a large industrial concrete floor being laid these days without the use of a Somero Laser Screed®.
Constructing over 800,000m² of concrete flooring every year, Stanford Industrial Flooring is a key provider in the design, construction, and finishing of high quality ground bearing and ground suspended concrete floor slabs for warehousing, retail and distribution facilities in the UK.
