Underfloor Heating Supplies Ltd has just launched Komfort Gem, an underfloor heating system that can simply be laid down directly onto the existing solid or timber floor to heat any room, saving valuable installation time.

Komfort Gem is lightweight, flexible and exceptionally thin at just 15mm in depth. The heating system is finished with 18mm boarding on top to complete the installation, unlike many systems where a concrete screed is required and calls for extra time to allow for the concrete to dry and cure, which can take up to 21 days.

Designed primarily for existing properties, Komfort Gem is ideal for residential and commercial refurbishments, especially for offices and high rise buildings, and when there is limited height available. The heating panel comprises a sheet of polystyrene with a reinforced aluminium membrane, bonded on both sides. This gives the panel great strength and flexibility, making it virtually impossible for the panel to snap. The aluminium top layer acts as a heat diffuser to radiate heat into the room, whilst the aluminium bottom layer acts as an insulator by reflecting the cold away from the system.

Installation is clean and straightforward with the Komfort Gem system. The panels, measuring approximately 800mm x 1200mm weigh just 5.9kg per pack of ten, making the system convenient to transport and easy to handle, eliminating any health and safety issues relating to lifting. The Komfort Gem panels can be cut to size with a craft knife, and are simply laid onto the floor with no need for adhesives. Komfort Gem uses a 100% recyclable polyethylene ‘green’ pipe, which is laid into the panels and connected to a manifold ready for primary connections. All that then remains is to fit the floorboards and skirting boards to complete the installation.

Due to Komfort Gem’s shallow depth, the heat is very close to the surface, achieving quick heating response and all the benefits of underfloor heating. On average underfloor heating offers a 20% energy saving over radiators, and this figure can be much higher in a well insulated environment.

The Komfort Gem can also be linked into existing radiator systems and used for conservatory extensions, kitchens and bathrooms where wall space is a premium, or any other room requiring clean lines. Once the boarding is in place, the system can also be tiled over with slate and ceramic tiles.
