Liquid Plastics, pioneer of liquid roof waterproofing systems, has helped to transform a Grade 1 listed army barracks into state of the art, luxury homes at Golden Hill Fort on the Isle of Wight.

“The roof of Golden Hill Fort will be one of the most spectacular features of the development,” comments Sean Cousins, Director of Golden Hill Homes Ltd. “Each two-storey home will have its own roof terrace with breathtaking views across the countryside and out to sea. But, as it currently stood the entire roof was in a state of serious disrepair, and remedial works and re-waterproofing were urgently required.”

The architects and developers worked closely with the English Heritage and as such needed to find weatherproof solutions for the external works that would compliment the existing materials. Liquid Plastics’ Decothane was deemed the most appropriate material because not only could it effectively waterproof the roof area, but it is also completely cold applied and could be created in a special colour (RAL 1013) to meet the strict requirements of the Heritage officer.

The Decothane membrane was applied directly to the existing brick substrate. The granite gutters, concrete deck, and brick firing steps were also treated, and a skid inhibiting grit was added to the walkway areas to make them safe for foot traffic.

“After we’d removed the Stirling board and power washed and pre-treated the area, the Decothane application was relatively quick and easy,” comments Andy James of Warner Contracting Ltd. “We had Liquid Plastics technical support on hand, and had previously carried out product trials so we had full confidence that the Decothane waterproofing would achieve the desired finish.”

Around the roof area there is also a series of walls that required weatherproof protection. “The wall areas were originally going to be K-rendered,” comments Guy Hedley from Liquid Plastics Technical Field Services Team, “However this would have taken approximately a month to complete, been very costly, and required a great deal of work. When we suggested using our Monolastex RE wall coating the client immediately changed the specification.”

As a result both Decothane and Monolastex RE were applied to the roof and walls in the colour specified by the English Heritage. The building now benefits from superior weatherproof protection, and the future residents can enjoy spectacular views from their new roof terraces.
