 | | FERMACELL FIGHTS BACK AGAINST NOISY NEIGHBOURS | | | Fermacell | | 13/11/2006 | | | You may not be able to get rid of your noisy neighbours, but a new website from Xella Dry Lining Systems shows you how to get rid of the noise.
NoisyNeighbours.com is aimed at homeowners, tenants and landlords who may have a noise problem, and at the builders who may be able to help them. It explains what `noisy' means in terms of decibels and how noise is transmitted - both airborne and impact noise. It also provides advice on how to minimise the transmission of airborne and impact noise.
The site clearly sets out good, better and best solutions for soundproofing walls, floors and ceilings to eliminate intrusive noise from neighbours upstairs, downstairs or next door. All the systems described can be installed by any competent general builder, and are based around the impressive acoustic properties of Xella's Fermacell board.
Unlike normal plasterboard, which is made of aerated gypsum between layers of paper, Fermacell consists of a solid gypsum matrix reinforced with cellulose fibres. This gives it an outstanding capacity to absorb the energy of sound vibrations, as well as high strength and impact resistance. This combination of acoustic capability and strength mean soundproofing systems using Fermacell can be much simpler and less space-consuming than alternatives based around conventional plasterboard. As an added bonus, fixtures such as shelves, radiators and heavy light fittings can be screwed directly into the Fermacell board. It is also moisture resistant, which means it can be used to soundproof party walls, floors and ceilings in bathrooms and kitchens, and it can be used to upgrade the fire resistance of the wall.
The soundproofing systems described on NoisyNeighbours.com range from fairly simple installations that add a layer of insulating material to the existing surfaces, to completely independent wall and ceiling linings and multi-layer flooring systems. For each system the site gives clear step-by-step installation instructions that the builder can print out for on-site reference and a check-list for the homeowner, tenant or landlord.
Fermacell is a brand of Xella Dry Lining, a division of Xella, the international building materials manufacturer
