LIGHTWAYS FOR HIGHWAYS
Stoakes Systems Ltd
11/10/2006
Kalwall translucent cladding is the dramatic highlight of the Highways Agency new regional control centre in Warrington. Designed by Atkins Architects, two elevations of the stunning building are clad with two-storey height Kalwall.
Kalwall was specified because of its unique ability to distribute diffused daylight evenly, without shadows, glare and hotspots. Unlike conventional glazing, it eliminates the need for curtains or blinds. By using the unique cladding system, the architects have neatly solved the problem of maximising natural daylight while retaining complete privacy and security. The soft intensity of full height, wall to wall daylighting means less artificial lighting and, because the system is highly insulating, energy costs are reduced. Experience in the working areas and relaxation spaces demonstrates that concentration and personal well-being radically improve. At night, the building glows with an ethereal light.
Kalwall has been specified for cladding and roofing in over 300 projects. Many of these are featured in the new 2006 Kalwall publication available from Stoakes Systems Ltd.
