Doncaster based Pegler has developed a selection of products designed to improve safety in a range of high risk environments, such as hospitals and care homes where the need for products that perform is a necessity rather than a luxury.

The two key issues in the news are hospital superbugs and the ways in which these can be dealt with effectively and the number of deaths that still occur every year from scalding. Pegler has decided there is safety in numbers by developing several products to combat these issues.

The two most popular products being the Kliniklene range of taps and mixers, which actually kill superbugs like MRSA on contact and the Peglertherm Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMV), which ensure that hot water is supplied at a safe temperature.

Kliniklene taps and mixers have a unique product incorporated into the coating that actively targets and kills many of the best known superbugs on contact. The results of the Antimicrobial Activity Efficacy tests over a 24-hour period are impressive. All the most common bacteria are virtually eradicated and certainly dealt with well in excess of the 95% target set by the NHS.

Doncaster based Pegler limited has been instrumental in developing such products, and Marketing Manager Phill Jackson said, 'Our Kliniklene is not a coating that is 'sprayed on' - it is as much a part of the products as the chromium plating. The new finish has been tested with cleaners using a typical cleaning regime, with hypochlorite based cleaners such as bleach - and it still retains its high degree of effectiveness.'

The likelihood is that many more products will be developed with such a coating in the coming years and a variety of applications can be envisaged. Already a range of products are available in the Performa Healthcare selection of taps and mixers, designed to meet virtually any requirement in a hospital or broader health care environment.

While Kliniklene deals with the superbugs, the Peglertherm 402 in line thermostatic mixing valves ensure that accidental scalding is a thing of the past. This product has been tested to the demanding standards of the NHS Estates Engineering Standard D08, which is required in high risk environments such as hospitals and care homes.

High distribution temperatures for hot water are required to kill water borne bacteria such as legionella. By using the 402 mixing valves, these high temperatures are controlled at the point of use, to a safe level to avoid scalding.

The TMV is supplied pre-set at a safe 43°C. On site commissioning allows the TMV to be set at recommended safe temperatures according to the outlet being supplied. The Peglertherm also shuts off the hot water supply automatically should the cold water supply fail for any reason.

Independent 3rd party testing under the Buildcert TMV3 scheme ensures all users can be confident that the 402 range will perform according to their design.

With products like Kliniklene and the TMV becoming more commonplace, we can all look forward to seeing marked reductions in cases of super-bugs and scalding incidents in high risk environments in future, as the number of these products installed in hospitals and Care Homes increases.
