A watertight expansion jointing system from illbruck Sealant Systems UK Ltd. is being used to provide specialist structural sealing solutions as part of the prestigious £180 million refurbishment of Ascot Racecourse.

The high profile refurbishment of Royal Ascot includes the fast track construction of major new grandstand facilities, parade ring and listed buildings.

As part of the specialist construction requirements of the new multi storey grandstand, robust Compriband Superspan jointing profiles were elected to provide a completely watertight sealing solution for the movement joints established between the concrete sections on parts of the grandstand.

The movement joints incorporated at some of the lower levels of the new grandstand were particularly complex and required specialist fabrication of the Superspan profiles to accommodate changes in direction of the construction gap.

Installed by CDM Contracts in areas that include the Royal Box, corporate hospitality areas and public viewing stands, Superspan's unique interlocking design comprises aluminium side plates and pre drilled mounting flanges, with a flexible central sealing insert and lateral sealing sheets. A special stainless steel capping section protects these components and is torqued down to achieve water tightness.

In some areas of the new construction, the Superspan sections have been combined with the new Compriband Jointspan FR material to provide fire rated joint sealing solutions capable of providing passive fire and cold smoke protection.

These systems have been designed to allow modern building materials the greatest possible degree of variation of structural movement and have been specified by leading architects and engineers across Europe for over 35 years.
