 | | ALKORPLAN FOR MACKIE ACADEMY | | | Alkor Drake Limited | | 16/10/2006 | | | Proving once again that its Alkorplan system makes the grade, Alkor Draka has gained excellent results with one of its latest projects in the education sector. Mackie Academy, a secondary school in the town of Stonehaven in South Aberdeenshire, now features the versatile roofing system from the single-ply waterproofing membrane manufacturer.
Founded in 1893, the Academy has approximately 1,200 pupils and 80 members of staff, and is built around a green central quadrangle. The main teaching block is four storeys high, and another two-storey block sits opposite, with a one-storey block linking the two. Approved contractor Briggs Roofing & Cladding refurbished the flat concrete roof, which was stripped of existing felt and covered with a vapour barrier. It was then protected by the Alkorplan F system, consisting of Alkorplan 35170 non-reinforced PVC roofing membrane mechanically fixed to 100mm insulation boards.
Steve Adams, Branch Manager of Briggs, who installed the Alkorplan, commented: 'For over 130 years, we have been building a business founded on technical expertise and total commitment to service. Our long experience has enabled us to develop a particular understanding of roof refurbishment, and the Alkorplan system, with its quick and clean installation, high quality and adaptability, makes it perfect for jobs like this.'
Rector Peter Campbell said: 'The newly refurbished roof is the latest of a number of improvements made to the school to develop the quality of the learning and teaching environment.'
The original Mackie Academy was destroyed in a fire in the 1920s and had to be re-built. In 1969, the secondary school, Mackie Academy, moved to a new purpose-built building on the Slug Road - this land had previously been the Academy playing fields and in fact the grounds around the present building are still the playing fields for Mackie Academy. The 1969 buildings have been added to over the years as the roll increased due to the growth of the town and catchment area. Sports facilities include two gymnasia, a multi-purpose games hall, an indoor swimming pool and playing fields.
Fully fire tested to BS 476 Part 3:1958 and ideal for fast-track building projects, Alkorplan® is assessed by the British Board of AgrÉment to have a life expectancy in excess of 30 years.
