The latest generation of low emissivity breather membranes for thermal management, Tyvek® Reflex from DuPont, is proving its mettle in the latest phase of the billion pound regeneration of Glasgow Harbour. Built by Taylor Woodrow Construction and designed by Glasgow-based architectural practice Cooper Cromer of Sauchiehall Street, work started on site in March 2005 on 770 apartments for Bryant Homes - Taylor Woodrow's UK housing brand, GALA City and Park Lane. Contractor Southern Maze is scheduled to finish the development in May 2006.

Developed by pioneering science company DuPont, Tyvek® Reflex is incorporated as part of the Powerwall energy-efficient wall system because its unique metalized surface has very low emissivity, minimising heat losses in winter and reflecting the heat in summer. Experiments carried out at the Building Research Establishment have shown that the reduction in thermal transmission with the installation of Tyvek® Reflex (compared to the use of a standard breather membrane) ranges from 10.4% to 15.6%. The exceptional performance it provides is due to the `breathsulate' technology, which combines high moisture diffusion capacity and high surface reflectivity in one product. The result is a 'vapour open' membrane that allows the construction of an airtight envelope.

This energy efficient building innovation has since been re-christened Tyvek® Enercor

Southern Maze Project Manager Bill McNeil explains: 'Quality control is a key issue for us. The reason we only use Tyvek® breather membranes is because, in our opinion, they are technically the best on the market and, from experience, we have found them to offer the most trouble-free installation. The added thermal benefits of Tyvek® Reflex help us to achieve the very low U-values possible with our system, and we now specify this product on all our projects. It is lightweight yet tough, easy to handle and cut, yet extremely tear-resistant and it comes with a 15-year guarantee.'

The next phases of the 130-acre integrated development will include new office, leisure and commercial facilities, and the whole development is due to be completed by Autumn 2006. This rejuvenation of the dockside area of Glasgow is one of the largest waterfront regeneration projects within the UK.

Ä to emphasise its key advantage - retaining heat within the core of a building. Now this technology can benefit the whole structural envelope because, as of April this year, there will be two EnercorÄ products available on the market: Tyvek® EnercorÄ Roofs and Tyvek® EnercorÄ Walls.
