 | | BPF LAUNCHES MAJOR CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC CREDENTIALS OF PVC-U WINDOWS AND DOORS | | | British Plastics Federation | | 05/10/2006 | | | The British Plastics Federation Windows Group, which represents Britain's PVC-U window manufacturers and suppliers, has launched a major promotional campaign aimed at reinforcing the environmental and economic advantages of their products to more than a thousand specifiers and architects involved in social housing projects across London and South-East England.
The multi-faceted campaign includes specifier briefing leaflets, tenant information, trade advertising, community radio programming and specifier seminar support using expert presentations from the industry.
Launching the 'Clear Choice for Windows' campaign, BPF Windows Group spokesman Thom Lant said: 'This is a highly creative, all encompassing information programme informing the London and South-East area initially but with the potential in future to roll out across the UK. It aims to support the outstanding credentials of our products from manufacture through to disposal.'
In spite of the fact that PVC-U windows and doors have an overwhelming market share of more than 79% of new build; 84% of social and 85% of domestic housing installations, the £3+ billion industry believes that specifiers in local authorities and housing associations will welcome the reassurance of expert opinion and the opportunity to up-date their understanding of the role and value of PVC-U.
The new emphasis on sustainability in the industry is supported by independent third party assessments made over the last two decades and complements work the industry has been doing to ensure that recycling systems are in place to recover the first PVC-U window products installed in the UK nearly forty years ago and which are now becoming available as a result of property refurbishment projects.
'Our industry is determined to demonstrate that it has strong environmental credentials. We have uniquely adopted a Europe-wide commitment shared by the entire PVC industry called 'Vinyl 2010.' This is dedicated to the Sustainable Development of the PVC industry and its products and far exceeds regulatory requirements. We have also achieved enormous success with our 'Recovinyl' Initiative which last year recovered and recycled over 6000 tonnes of PVC-U window profiles - almost 100% above forecast. This programme has recruited fifty nationwide collectors feeding into 19 recycling operations all of which has vastly increased the momentum for recovering and recycling PVC-U windows and doors in the UK. When you add all this together, it means that from the start of the life cycle we operate clean, safe processes and at the end of forty years or more useful life for a PVC window, it can be recycled to create new products,' said Mr Lant.
The PVC-U windows sector has also benefited from major improvements in the technical performance of its products as well as in the range of style, finishes, textures and colours available. The combination of these factors ensures that PVC-U specified for social housing offers exceptional energy efficiency, minimal on-going maintenance reducing the need to work at heights, reduced environmental impacts and a choice of design which meets all housing and architectural styles.
