 | | FIRST MINISTER OPENS “VITAL” NEW DEVELOPMENT | | | Castle Cement | | 02/10/2006 | | | One of the most important manufacturing projects of recent years was officially opened by the Welsh First Minister on Friday last week. (Sep 29). Rhodri Morgan joined local community leaders, business people and politicians to celebrate the £64 million new kiln at Castle Cement's Padeswood works in Flintshire.
TV weather presenter Sian Lloyd hosted the event and a choir from a local school sang during the ceremony.
The investment is seen as a vital project for the future of the Welsh economy, the local community and the environment, putting Padeswood at the leading edge of cement production in Europe.
The new kiln replaces old plant at the works and is already cutting back drastically on greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of cement.
The kiln includes the usage of alternative fuels and the whole process is closely monitored using the latest computerised technology.
It reinforces Castle's commitment to manufacturing within the UK, enables the company to provide a high reliability of supply and to produce a high quality light-coloured cement, which is in line with customer demand.
'We are delighted to welcome the First Minister to Padeswood,' said Peter Weller, Managing Director of Castle Cement. 'His presence shows how significant this new development is for Wales.
'As well as being one of the largest investments in manufacturing in recent years, this new kiln is a fine example of how heavy industry can help meet environmental targets.'
After addressing the audience, the First Minister toured the Padeswood site, to see how each step of the process is cleaner and more efficient than before.
From the model restoration work at nearby Cefn Mawr Quarry, where the limestone is gained, to the water lagoon, the processes at Padeswood are setting new environmental standards for the cement industry.
'This investment is a vote of confidence in the future of the Welsh economy,' said Peter Weller. 'And it offers the Welsh environment a more sustainable future.'
