 | | LANDMARK ARTS COUNCIL BUILDING GETS FOAMGLAS® ALL ROUND! | | | FOAMGLAS | | 01/11/2005 | | | The familiar circular building where such famous names as The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd made their names is currently undergoing a major redevelopment, which will see it re-open in early 2006. The Roundhouse in Camden, once a historic steam engine repair building, will become one of Europe's most dynamic performance spaces and one of the world's most exciting creative centres for young people. And playing centre stage in that redevelopment is FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation from Pittsburgh Corning.
Working from the outset of the project with Structural Engineers Anthony Hunt Associates of Cirencester, Pittsburgh Corning's technical staff provided a specification for the building to incorporate FOAMGLAS® into the whole building envelope. As a result, Architects John McAslan and Partners of Kensington specified FOAMGLAS® for the floor, the faÇade and the flat roof.
The 435m2 floor area demanded an insulation that once installed would continue to meet all the structural demands without risk of degradation. Only FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation could provide that guarantee. 100mm thick Floorboard was dry applied with butted and staggered joints onto 200mm thick mass fill. A tanking membrane was applied underneath a 400mm thick reinforced concrete slab. FOAMGLAS© meets all of the requirements of high compressive strength, whilst remaining totally water and vapour proof.
The recently launched W+F® FaÇade system has been used to create the external facade of the building. 120mm thick W+F® Slab is adhered to the external concrete wall, with an open jointed facade in aluminium fixed to it. Originally, to ensure that the Architects specific aesthetic demands were met, the FOAMGLAS®, which is visible through the open joints of the facade was to be painted. However, the effect of FOAMGLAS® in its natural state was dramatic enough to satisfy the design and it remains unpainted. FOAMGLAS® will ensure that water and vapour proof integrity is maintained despite the open nature of the faÇade.
FaÇade systems require special consideration in respect of fire safety; FOAMGLAS® W+F Slab is non-combustible, EuroClass A1 and in a situation of fire provides safety and zero contribution. It does not need to be membrane protected because it is waterproof.
A Tapered Roof System by Pittsburgh Corning is used for the 430m2 flat roof area, where 130mm thick (min) FOAMGLAS® T4 has been adhered in hot bitumen to the substrate, followed by a bitumen felt membrane and a Rhepanol single ply outer membrane. The TRS system provides slabs ready cut to falls by special computer programme, which also provides a layout and installation plan.
The Roundhouse Trust was established in 1998 to lead the redevelopment project - when reopened, the building which had not only been a legendary rock venue, but also played host to the punk revolution and fringe theatre in its time, will accommodate over 3000 people standing or 1700 seated in a flexible and adaptable performance space. | |
