At Slough Estates' new Weston-super-Mare development for Bradfords Building Supplies Ltd, the warehouse and trade counter is complemented by 7,500 sq.m. of external stockyard for storage of materials such as bricks, stone, gravels and sand. To meet the stringent drainage discharge consent on this very shallow and level site, consulting engineers Robert West specified Hydro International's Stormbloc® modular stormwater storage system, supported by a Hydro-Brake® Flow Control device.

Project Engineer Peter Campbell explained: 'The site only has an invert difference of 1.5 metres to the Wessex Water surface drainage outlet, and for this area of drainage, the West Mendip Drainage Board had specified a limit of only 3 litres per second.'

'To achieve this, we designed a system of surface gullies and linear drainage discharging into 284 cubic metres of Stormbloc®, laid in a single layer, with an impermeable membrane surround. The Stormbloc® system could be sited immediately under the service yard and car park as it has a high loadbearing capacity, and allowed vehicles to use yard and car park without extensive additional loadbearing construction, thus saving valuable space.'

'As the yard is used for storing sand and gravels, and there is extensive transport movement, the storage tank is protected by silt traps and a hydrocarbons interceptor. In addition manhole access allows inspection of the Stormbloc® storage units, which has channels to allow rodding/jetting if required.'

Stormbloc® stormwater storage and infiltration medium from Hydro International is a cost-effective modular block system, with a designed-in and patented access tunnel for easy maintenance. The modular blocks make Stormbloc® quick and easy to install in almost any situation including industrial and commercial projects as well as residential developments, SUDS schemes and conveyance applications. Strong enough to withstand traffic loads, Stormbloc® can be installed under roads, parking areas, driveways and landscaped areas without additional protection.

Stormbloc® is available in eco-green polypropylene 800 X 800 X 660 mm blocks providing high volume water storage with a 95% void ratio. The system is designed so that, when installed, a 222 X 570 mm cross-section access tunnel runs through the blocks. This can be accessed easily by a CCTV or a high pressure jetting hose inserted to shift any accumulated sediment, silt or debris in the system, should the need arise - a feature which sets it apart from its competitors.
