Following the appointment as the Highways Agency Managing Agent for Area 8, which extends over Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire, one of the early problems encountered by the maintenance contractor, Carillion-URS, was the reinstatement of failing road surface ironwork units.

To assist in determining the most suitable long-term solution to the problem, the contractor turned to Tamworth based specialist road maintenance material manufacturer - the Instarmac Group plc. Instarmac recommended trials using both its resin based mortars and as a result, a joint venture was set up to establish the most suitable system for the rapid reinstatement of manhole covers and frames on busy trunk roads, such as the Al 4.

Instarmac's Ironwork Reinstatement System, which has recently been BBA/Hapas approved for preventing premature failures in type 1, 2,3 & 4 roads, is particularly effective for bedding ductile or heavily trafficked ironwork.

Since its formulation is designed to create a stiff supporting mortar, Ultracrete PY4 was used to bed the ironwork with Ultracrete PY5, which forms a flowable consistency suitable for filling, bonding and securing, being employed as the ironwork's backfill. In order to avoid unnecessary waste, both Ultracrete PY4 and PY5 polyester resin mortars are supplied as complete packs. Both materials have a proven track record and unique properties that include, rapid strength gain, excellent flexural and tensile strengths. They can be applied at temperatures as low as 0°C and can be trafficked within 40 minutes of installation. In addition, both materials comply with the Department of Transport Design Manual for Roads and Bridges; 'Mortars for bedding ironwork', which requires such mortars to reach 5N/mm2 tensile strength and 30N/mm2 compressive strength in 3 hours.

Carillion-URS was impressed with the initial outcome of the trials and has decided to monitor the reinstated manholes over the next 6 months. During this period, a number of Carillion-URS employees have attended an Instarmac Material Awareness Day to gain more in-depth knowledge on the Ultracrete Ironwork Reinstatement System.
