As part of the programme to improve the UK's water quality to the Environment Agency's standards, Yorkshire Water has invested in a major upgrade to its wastewater treatment works at Micklefield, East of Leeds. To provide additional protection for the inlet works from sediment and silts carried in inflowing primary sewage, Yorkshire Water have installed Hydro's Grit King® Separator, supported by a Hydro Grit-Cleanse™ Classifier.

The village of Micklefield, a former mining community, is undergoing expansion through development for commuter homes. At the same time the A1, which runs by the village, was being upgraded and rerouted over the site of the previous small treatment works, as a motorway spur to connect to the M1 motorway.

Yorkshire Water has taken the opportunity to re-build the works, and has included a 2.1 metre diameter Hydro Grit King® Separator at the inlet to protect the works from sediments and solids. The Grit King® has been installed within a concrete chamber in grade 304 stainless steel with a peak flow rate of 110 l/sec, and is designed to remove at least 95% of grits and silts down to 200 microns.

The solids are pumped to Hydro's Grit-Cleanse™ Classifier, also in grade 304 stainless steel, which provides washed grits with less than 5% faecal organic material, suitable for disposal/use elsewhere.

Mr Darroch Baker, Site Manager, Yorkshire Water Services Ltd, commented: 'The Hydro Grit King® design is certainly one of the best pieces of degritting equipment available. We have had no operational problems and routine maintenance has been straightforward.'

The Hydro Grit-King® uses vortex technology to allow particles to settle out by gravity into the grit pot over a very wide range of flow rates, traps floatables and enables the overflow to be discharged to the treatment works. It requires minimal maintenance and has no power requirements or moving parts.

When used with the Hydro Grit-Clearose™, the grit and silt is fluidised by backwash within the Grit King® Separator, before being pumped into the well of the classifier. Here it is washed by water spray and transported up an inclined trough by Archimedean screw to be finally discharged into skips.

Main contractor on the Micklefield WVVTW site was Birse Water, and installation of the Grit King® Separator and Grit-Cleanse™ were by Hydro International.

Notes to Editors: Hydro International, which has offices in the UK, USA and Ireland, provides cost-effective solutions for controlling the quantity and improving the quality of water, without power or moving parts, and with minimal maintenance.
