Laser-grinding a concrete floor to the Concrete Society TR34 DM2 flatness standard has enabled TNT Logistics to install VNA racking and provide 2000 more pallet spaces at its Hams Hall distribution centre in the West Midlands. The warehouse is the UK national distribution centre for Chubb Fire Ltd who needed to stock 35 per cent more equipment than before and also accommodate a production facility in the building. Stock had previously been stored on racking in a wide-aisle format and handled by reach trucks, and floor flatness was only suitable for free movement trucks.

TNT Logistics designed a new racking layout with half the storage being VNA and half wide-aisle. Concrete Grinding Ltd was appointed to upgrade the VNA aisles to allow wire-guided trucks to operate at maximum efficiency. Following a profileograph survey six 60-metre-long aisles were ground to TR34 DM2 standard with Concrete Grinding's Laser-Grinder machine. The work was carried out to very tight deadlines at a rate of three days per aisle, with the warehouse continuing to function throughout the contract.

As part of the contract Concrete Grinding also repaired some 180 linear metres of floor joints and dust-proofed the new aisles.
