CONSTRUCTING WITH CONSIDERATION

It is never easy to deal with serious illness, and what patients, family and staff need to help them cope with the trauma involved are peaceful, comfortable surroundings. This is why the new critical care facility at Lincoln County Hospital was designed to provide an aesthetically pleasing, high performing environment for the people giving and receiving the critical care, and was registered with the Considerate Constructors scheme during construction to minimise the impact of the work on hospital patients.

The £2.6 million project delivered by local contractors Linpave Building Limited provided a new extension housing 12 critical care beds, as well as refurbishment of an existing area to accommodate an 8 bed high dependency unit. The thoughtful design from Globe Architects uses a combination of warm brickwork and fresh looking insulated panels to first welcome and then draw the eye to the unusual `flyover' section towards the rear of the building. This is supported on stilts, creating a covered walkway beneath that links the new unit with the main hospital.

Three different products from Kingspan Insulated Panels were specified and then fitted by cladding contractors MT Commercial Services Ltd to achieve the desired appearance and level of performance: KS1000 RW Trapezoidal roof panels in Corus Colorcoat HPS200® in Terracotta, KS 1000 LP Lo Pitch roof panels also in Corus Colorcoat HPS200® in Terracotta and KS1000 MR Micro Rib architectural wall panels in Corus Colorcoat Celestia® in Aquarius and Corus Colorcoat HPS200® in Mushroom.

Advantages of using Kingspan's products include insurer approved certification to LPS 1181 from the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), and a range of fire engineered approved specifications. Kingspan Insulated Panel systems are also fully compliant with Thermal Building Regulations, Part L and Section 6; including low air leakage. As a final, not inconsiderable benefit, the systems are available with Kingspan's unique Total Guarantee Assurance, which provides up to 25 years guarantee for coating, thermal and structural performance.

Pete Wilson of Globe Architects commented 'Because part of the building is supported on stilts we needed materials that are lightweight yet durable and effective. Kingspan Insulated Panels are market leaders in their field, with proven products, so when specifying panels they are our preferred choice. In this case the known performance and lightweight properties of the panels meant that they once again fitted the bill.'
