The quality of tenant Rebecca Pengelly's life has been transformed this week thanks to the installation of two simple security gates.

Her block, in Dagenham, east London, was blighted by youths who were using her yard as a venue for antisocial behaviour.

But now, the electronically locked fob gates, installed by Barking and Dagenham Council at a cost of £17,000, have kept the youths out and returned the yard to Mrs Pengelly and her fellow tenants.

"We've never had it so good," says Mrs Pengelly, 80, "the place really belongs to the residents again.

"Before, we had all the boys using the sheds to smoke, they used to throw eggs at the windows and come banging on doors in the blocks to annoy people.

"Now it's much quieter. It's really nice because no one can get round the back here and there's very few annoyances now. Everyone is much happier."
