Solar Pyramid

Cricket legend Ian Botham has given his backing to the visionary Solar Pyramid, being built near Chesterfield in North Derbyshire.

Beefy was presented with a 'Moment in Time' to commemorate the start of his 11th fundraising Botham Walk.

Ian is making his latest journey to raise funds for two cancer charities - Leukaemia Research and The Teenage Cancer Trust - and it sees him spend nine days covering all points of the compass including Belfast, Edinburgh, Cambridge and Southampton, stopping off along the way in other cities where both charities have projects.

Solar Pyramid co-creators Richard Lester Swain and Adam Walkden joined Ian on the Sheffield leg of the walk and officially handed over the 'Moment in Time' at the point where the party passed closest to the pyramid site.

Richard Lester Swain comments: "It was an honour to join Ian on his charity walk and present him with his 'Moment in Time'.

"Leukaemia Research is the first of three charity partners adopted by the Solar Pyramid project team and we are committed to donating £500,000 to each worthy cause from a proportion of the income raised from 'Moment in Time' purchases."

Ian adds: "I am delighted that the Solar Pyramid has adopted Leukaemia Research as one of its charities.

"I have my Moment in Time for the very first minute of this walk and would urge everyone to buy theirs to commemorate a special time in their life and help me bowl out cancer."

Ian's 'Moment' is on 9th October at 10am - the date and time he started his most recent Botham Walk - and is guaranteed his own place in history.

Only one person can 'own' each one-minute slot on the sundial, which when completed next year will be the world's largest timepiece and the UK's biggest work of art.

Ian's 'Moment in Time' will be marked on a minute map at the Solar Pyramid site and also published on the dedicated website

Each 'Moment in Time' is available exclusively at bothamwalk. including a certificate confirming ownership. In addition, every chosen 'Moment' will be shown on giant video screens built into the pyramid structure. Each special 'Moment' will be displayed to visitors at the Solar Pyramid on the exact day/minute purchased, although there will be the option to keep the dedication private.

The Solar Pyramid project is set to be a major UK visitor attraction, and stimulate the renaissance and regeneration of Britain's former coal and steel heartland.

The 58 metre (190ft) structure will form the centrepiece of the new Pools Brook Country Park near Chesterfield, once the site of the former Ireland Colliery, and its three highly-polished stainless steel leaning blade-like towers will cast a shadow onto an enormous elliptical sundial base telling the date and time.

The project has harnessed the expertise of leading engineers, planners, environmentalists and designers, as well as securing the support of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, and the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge University.

A state-of-the-art Visitor Centre is being built at the site which, in addition to explaining more about the design and construction of The Solar Pyramid, will become a centre of excellence for exploring the relationship between the earth and sun, and developing ideas for utilising solar energy and movement.
