The new 7.7 km A421 Great Barford Bypass is being constructed for the Highways Agency to alleviate heavy traffic on its way to Bedford and on to join the A1. In order to attenuate stormwater runoff from the highway, 6 balancing ponds have been constructed, and installed with Hydro-Brake® Chambers from the Hydro International and CPM Joint Venture. The use of Hydro-Brake® Chambers reduces installation costs and land requirements when compared to conventional techniques.

Project engineer Albert Kontoh of consulting engineers Capita Symonds Group commented: 'Because at a wide range of flow conditions, the Hydro-Brake® Flow Control device maximises the amount of discharge in line with the Environment Agency's limit of 4 litres/second/ hectare of contributing area, we are able to reduce the amount of storage required for the balancing ponds. This helps reduce the land take for the tanks as well as the costs of construction.' Mike Brookes, Edmund Nuttall Project Manager, commented: 'From a procurement point of view, ordering pre-cast chambers with Hydro-Brake® already fitted wins on quality and was a good reason forgoing through CPM.'

The 6 balancing ponds range in size from 500 cu.m. to 5990 cu.m. and are designed as hybrid systems with permanently wet sump area and vegetated dry sections area to ensure effective entrapment of debris and silt at most stages of inflow. The outflow of each pond is fitted with a Hydro-Brake® Chamber.

One of the principle benefits of the Hydro-Brake® Chamber is that no benching or coring is required during installation. The concrete chamber is pre-fitted with a Hydro-Brake® Flow Control complete with pre-formed benching and headwall. The one-piece chamber reduces the need for concrete surround and the semi-circular benching allows easy access to the sump area for sediment removal.

The large cross section of the Hydro-Brake® also allows stormwat
