AMERICAN HARDWOODS HOLD FIRM IN UK AND MOVE AHEAD IN IRELAND

In the first six months of 2006 American hardwood exports to UK held steady in volume and value, compared to the same period last year, although the value of American hardwood veneer fell by 8%. The total value of primary hardwood products shipped to the UK was $52 million of which sawn timber accounted for 75% of the total. Logs shipments increased by 33% to 10,898 m3 valued at $8.4 million. In a full year the UK is worth over $100 million to US exporters.

Direct shipments for the first six months from the USA to the Republic of Ireland were worth $11 million - up 8% on the same period in 2005. Sawn timber accounts for 84% of the total.

In the UK White Oak was way out in front with $19 million imported in six months followed by Ash at $4.7 million and Tulipwood at $3.2 million. Hard Maple and Walnut were each imported to a value of $2.7 million.

Total exports of hardwood lumber from the US to the EU were up 3.5% in value and 4% in volume which compares with worldwide exports up 7% and 5% respectively.
