 | | STEELING AGAINST GAS PENETRATION | | | Z-Led Ltd | | 02/05/2007 | | | Innovative construction techniques are being adopted in the build of a steel processing facility to ensure optimum protection.
Thames Reinforcements and Hendersons are using steelframe technology to build a 5400m2, 50m high steel cutting and bending factory overlooking the Medway estuary in Sheerness on a four-acre site formerly used as a chemical recycling depot. A new membrane, Z-Led’s PROTECT GDB10 Gas & Damp Barrier, is being used to simultaneously provide a damp-proof course and ensure hydrocarbons, benzines and other chemicals in the ground do not affect the boundary watercourse, and that harmful gases do not penetrate into the building.
Ian Jefferies, project co-ordinator, explained, “We obviously needed a dpm anyway, but we also had to address the potential risk of any chemical contamination seeping out, for both compliance with Regulations and our own concerns over long-term protection of people on the site. The GDB10 means we only have to fit one membrane instead of two, saving on labour, and the material cost was competitive. The lads are finding it easy to use, even though it is the first time they have installed it.”
Z-Led PROTECT GDB10 Gas and Damp Barrier not only stops any methane, carbon dioxide and radon from entering the building, but also provides an effective damp-proof membrane. When installed with Z-Led’s Cavity & Slab Edge Protection System, the GDB10 membrane provides a continuous barrier for protection of buildings against both gas and damp at ground level. When used as an oversite membrane below floor slabs or suspended floors, it provides a complete solution in line with Building Regulations Part C and BRE Report BR 414 2001 Construction of buildings on gas contaminated land.
The multi-layer reinforced polyethylene/polypropylene membrane with integral continuous solid aluminium foil is supplied with full fixing instructions. Tough and durable, Z-Led PROTECT GDB10 provides excellent tensile strength and enhanced puncture and tear resistance, yet it is easy to cut and, at only 17.5kg/roll, lightweight to handle. Each roll is 40m x long and 2.5m wide.
The Z-Led PROTECT GDB10 is complemented by a range of accessories to ensure effective installation of the membrane, including Cavity and Slab Edge Protection Trays, Joint Protection Tape, and Universal Pipe Seals. A range of sub floor depressurisation products is also available to ensure effective ventilation of gases from below suspended floors.
