Already enjoying BS7950 and PAS24 accreditation, the windows and doors collection from Rationel Windows and Doors has now been awarded Secured by Design status.

In its fight against crime, Police forces across the country are welcoming Secured by Design as part of effective crime prevention.

By specifying products from the Rationel range, architects and specifiers can rest assured that they are contributing to greater security levels for properties, and enhanced safety for the home owners.

With the average cost of a burglary being estimated at £3,300, there is a strong case for home owners to look out for Secured by Design approved windows. It is claimed that Secured by Design can reduce burglary by 50%, and criminal damage by 25%.

Having undergone independent accreditation, Rationel Windows and Doors has won the right to use the Secured by Design logo on all of its windows and doors for use at ground floor level.

Specifiers now have the opportunity to call for any of the company's windows, and most doors (apart from sliding and stable), to be made to Secured by Design standards.

Included in the company's range of products are the Domus and Aldus windows.

Constructed entirely from slow-grown softwood taken from well managed forests, Domus is available is a range of painted finishes and stains.

Timber used in the construction of these windows is grown in the Arctic Circle where trees grow more slowly without the need for fertiliser.

This results in the heartwood of the tree (the part used in the manufacture of the windows) having a denser and tighter cell structure than those grown in warmer climates. This, in turn, ensures the finished window has greater resistance to the effects of weathering, rotting and warping.

Aldus differs from Domus in one crucial area - it has the addition of an aluminium cladding on the exterior. In all other respects, it is exactly the same as the Domus.

The advantage of the aluminium cladding is that the maintenance cycle is lengthened.

Both windows are identical in appearance. Domus can therefore be used on lower levels of a property, while Aldus can be used on the upper floors of high-rise buildings.

Commenting on the award of Secured by Design, Rationel's managing director Karl Zierold states: "In a country where crime is a serious issue, we at Rationel feel a responsibility to produce goods that will withstand serious attack. The Secured by Design award endorses our position as a manufacturer of high quality timber and composite windows that have high levels of security built-in as standard".
