 | | | | CASE FOR THE DEFENCE | | | | | 17/04/2008 | | | An angled column casing installation and the need to maintain the advanced engineering and technological reputation associated with BMW, were just two of the challenges that Pendock faced at new Worcester based dealership Robert Stern BMW. | | | Specialist showroom architects, Scaramanga Design, were encouraged by planners to create a striking and visually appealing structure that was different to the typical ‘square box’ normally associated with car dealerships.
Working to the client brief, the planners’ expectations and the specified standards required from BMW for its dealerships, the Robert Stern building provides an excellent interior showroom space and offices, with an extensive forecourt area for pre-owned vehicles.
In addition to providing an integrated aesthetic finish to structural columns and interior glazing bars, Pendock pre-formed and pre-finished casings were also specified for their ability to reduce maintenance and cleaning. Nick Stevens, Scaramanga’s architect and project manager on the contract explained: “Regular cleaning of showrooms demands that vehicles need to be moved for access.
This is not only very time consuming, but also presents the opportunity of accidental damage. The gloss finish on the Pendock casings not only retains a clean appearance, but can be simply wiped down as there are no dust or dirt traps. Also, the resilient bonded ply and Formica finish is very resistant to scuffing and damage.”
A total of 27 square and circular section casings, finished in Formica high gloss white laminate with contrasting black inner collars, were used in the new dealership to conceal structural columns. As several of the casings needed to be installed at an 80 degree angle, precision cutting and installation on-site was a critical part of the process to ensure the final fit and finish met the demands of both architect and client.
Also, seven of the casings were situated very close to glass walls making normal screw fixing impossible. To overcome this the casings were designed to push together, forming a ready made joint, which was then bonded to create a perfect finish.
The main contractor on the project was Ashe Construction and approved installer, Leisure Structures, installed the Pendock casings |
